As every year i´ve tried to publish all about the circus of Formula 1 and brands around .   See post 2013 and other new deals of 2014.

TEAMS

In this season theres is not such a big news, moreover than drivers changes, something that always mean a change of personal sponosrs:

  • Claró signs with Ferrari. It´s not because of the drivers so i suppose is a brand managers choice.
  • Mclaren Honda has started withot a main sponsor so the car looks really clean.
  • Banco do Brasil comes to the front row with Sauber as partner of Felipe Nasr.
  • Manor car´s are white – red with no brnads, until the third GP, were we can see the sport brand ERREA.

Talking about Spanish brands:

    • SANTANDER has a long term deal with Ferrari until 2017 and i suppose they will focused on German and UK activation. They keep some kind of sponsosrship deal with McLaren without branding.
    • CEPSA, which was trying to focused on Real Madrid sponsor agreement, has renewed with Toro Rosso supporting Carlos Sainz Jr with good results at the begining.
    • ESTRELLA GALICIA,  the beer company and their non alcoholic brand called 0´0 has also a deal with Carlos Sainz Jr, even they have big efforts on MotoGP.
    • MOVISTAR sound to help Alonso and Honda but finally there is no deal. Notice they have tv rights of Formula one in Spain, in exclusive from 2016, and for further information ex-Marketing Manager of Santander moved to Movistar at the beginning of 2015.

We have seen the first F1 race and could see news and updates from 2013…

Let´s see news in 2014 season.

NEW MEMBERS – PARTNERS

-          REPUCOM. First of all, the most interesting for sports marketing. Global consultancy has sign a deal with team McLaren. The german brand is the world leader in brand analysis and market research and ROI optimization. We will see if this new alliance will work for the Team´s sponsors, a new way for Repucom to win more clients…

-          Martini. Italian brand appearance is the most remarkable in the paddock. The deal includes naming rights = Williams Martini Racing, and a big branding pack on the car and drivers equipment. According to Sports Pro, the agreement is worth US$15 million annually for 5 years. Excited to see activation Plan!.

-          Petrobras and Banco do Brasil, has  sign with Williams, due to Felipe Massa arrival and young brasilian driver Felipe Nasr as a tester.

-          Genworth, american insurance company and Esquire magazine are also new sponsors of Williams, with their logo on rear wings.

-          Roshfrans, oil-company from Mexico, supports Force India after Sergio Pérez signing. Logo on jumpsuit and rear wings.

-          Gatorade, joins Sahara Force India as official supplier.

-          Auden McKenzie, pharma division will be integrated in Checo Pérez and Nico Hulkenberg Force India cars.

-          Yota Phone Devices, russian smartphones, is new partner of Lotus F1.

-          Varlion, spanish brand has signed as official supplier of Force India. This agreement allow them to broad their horizons in sports equipment, not only as a paddel brand. They are also launching some specialised products for motor, such a gloves, boots, etc. news.

-          Asos.com online shopping joins McLaren with logo on rear wing.

-          Modo Eyewear is official sponsor of Caterham F1 and also Gp2 team. It´s interesting that Sunglasses brands are not in a leading role in F1 as wells as in MotoGp…

Apart, we could find a lot of  investment fund and holdings:

-          Pacific Ventures, Dubai with Sauber;

-          Sapinda Holding B.V. european investors supports Toro Rosso, with logo in front wing. Replace Falcon Private bank

-          Unifin, from Mexico, joins Sauber with logo on car´s nose, close to “compadres”  TelMex.

* Last but not least,  PIRELLI, has updated their contract as official partner of Formula 1 until 2016. Also with GP2 & GP3.

CHANGES – TRANSFERS

In Formula 1 world brands usually helps drivers more than temas, so changes and new signing of drivers moves brands with them. In this season 2014, besides new drivers, there has benn some changes:

-          Sergio Pérez moves to  Sahara Force India. And with him most of his local personal sponsors: Claró - Carlos Slim´s mobile network operator, Ficrea (finance company) or  Consorcio Aristos a building company. Astana Investment (known for the cycling team), moves to Force India from Williams, and will have logo on lateral nose.

-          PDVSA  moves to Lotus with Pastor Maldonado.

-          Mc Gregor goes with their brand ambassador Giedo Van der Garde in his new carrer on Sauber  after Caterham. Fashion brand has give up sponsoring Williams.

Some lucky guys as Raikkonen or Ricciardo don´t need to contribute with any sponsors …

QUITS

-          Vodafone. Ends contract with McLaren Mercedes.

-          Volkswagen in 2013 it was partner of Toro Rosso. It was supossed to became the engine provider but it looks .

-          Venezuela Tourism, that supports Williams in 2013, leave the team and Maldonado.

-          Reebok  and Medion are no longer partners of Force India.

-          BRM Chronographes was the official watch partner of Caterham.

GP´s

Pirelli has announced title sponsor of Montmeló – Cataluña  ’Gran Premio De España Pirelli 2014′ and Hungaroring ‘Formula 1 Pirelli Magyar Nagydij 2014′. Others GP´s keep last year names..

Canada, Italy Singapur, Japan, USA,  Brasil and newcomer Russia (Sochi) haven´t title partners for 2014.

We will be watching for any other news during the seasnon…

Report – Formula 1 Partners and sponsors. Season 2013

I am a Formula 1 supporter, and I had never managed to figure out a clear picture of all the official sponsors, partners or even associate brands. The purpose of this report is to solve that, or at least, try to do it; as you know, there are always contracts signed throughout the season, as well as some brands that are only interested in a certain Grand Prix. Furthermore, legal restrictions in the different countries, for example regarding alcohol and tobacco, must be taken into account.

After the analysis, I have come to the conclusion that most of the brands share the same ideas: leadership, excellence, innovation, technology, luxury, exclusiveness… but also teamwork, ability, resistance, passion, emotion, risk

All the above make Formula 1 a GLOBAL product. And that´s the way promoters refer to their sponsors “A Global Partner of Formula 1”.

This season there are 2 new brands taking part of this play; that is, more economic resources, as well as more of that exclusivity and luxury mentioned above:

  • ROLEX, as Official TimePiece and the naming right for the Australian GP.
  • FLY EMIRATES, a further step within their global expansion strategy.

After studying the global sponsors network in detail, we can divide them into several CATEGORIES.

- Automotive, of course, as engine makers. Infiniti with Red Bull, Mercedes Benz with their own team, Renault with Lotus, Fiat with Ferrari… big motor groups.

- Drinks specially energy drinks. Red Bull of course with their 2 teams, but also Coca-Cola´s Burn is currently sponsoring Lotus F1, as well as Monster that sponsors Mercedes AMG. On the other side, we also have TNT as a partner for Ferrari.

- Alcoholic Drinks. Force india is the most clear example. . Their cars have so many ads from this kind of official sponsor that almost look like pubs: Vladivar vodka, Kingfisher, Whyte and Mackay scotch whisky. Jhonnie walker is another historical brand with Lotus, and Tequila José Cuervo is with Sauber in order to their “mexican connection” (Carlos Slim)

- Oil companies, as oil suppliers as well as supporters for innovation and investigation. Petronas give the naming of Mercedes team, Shell with Ferrari or the Spanish brand CEPSA with Toro Rosso.

- Banks. Big international holdings or even Trading companies. Santander with Ferrari and McLaren, MIG with Mercedes or Astana as partner of Williams F1 Team.

- Watches & Jewellery. Most of the teams and drivers have one of these brands sponsoring them. That’s why ROLEX has just started to sponsor F1 teams. Casio with Red Bull, Tag Heuer with McLaren, Hublot with Ferrari (also official FIFA partner, as just seen in the Confederations Cup).

- Airlines. They don’t sponsor any specific team, but they sometimes give their name to the GP located within their origin country: . Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi or Gulf Air Bahrain. Qantas (Aus) has lost the naming of local GP, (Rolex) but it appears in some aids.

On the other hand, at the end of 2012, it was published the Tracking IOPE de Notoriedad de Patrocinio showed that Santander was in first place when talking about associate brands to Formula 1. Interesting data, taking into account that it is not an official partner, but…

SANTANDER.

  • Sponsor of 2 teams, Ferrari and McLaren,
  • Most popular drivers, Alonso and Hamilton + Button and Massa.
  • Naming + pódium of German and UK GP´s as strategical markets.
  • Extra Pack of branding aids in some circuits.

  • Reb Bull Racing leader in Facebook, while Ferrari and McLaren do so in Twitter, with a higher number of followers.
  • Fernando Alonso is the King of Twitter followed by Hamilton and Button. On the other hand, Lewis is the one with more fans in Facebook (around 1.5 million).

Now that the first part of the season has gone by, it seems that we are starting to get a clear picture of what the classification may look like. Apparently only 3-4 drivers will be “fighting” for the Championship, even though Vettel and his Red Bull seem to be stronger than the others.

Time will tell!
